English Rose is the first half of a 2-part project, inviting french recording artists who write and sing in English to correct and perfect their lyrics, their intonation and pronunciation, and to gain a considerable advantage on the international music scene.
Non-natives do not always have enough of the in-born musicality of the English language to produce songs that touch the hearts and ears of anglophones. Sometimes a very slight difference in intonation can be «wrong» enough to switch off the listener’s ears.
Being born and bred in England, having lived and worked in France for the last 30 years, and being a singer-songwriter myself, I am able to dissect and tidy, or re-write lyrics, I can find the melody in the words themselves and match them to the actual melody of the song. We learn to identify the intonation of our mother tongue when still in the womb, its more than second nature!
These changes can also lead to rhythm and tune changes. The artist can often be destabilized by these changes after years of singing his songs the same way, its real mental gymnastics! But the credibility that these changes will bring, will be the difference between listeners who understand the lyrics, and those that will only listen to the music. When we understand what is being said, we want to listen, and the goal of any writer is to be able to communicate with others.
And when we look at the number of anglophones in the world, it’s well worth the effort to hone the lyrics and the performance of each song. Producers can at last take the risk in promoting new french talent internationally.
My work is essential pre-recording, it takes time to get used to the changes that will be made, there is practice to do before going into the studio. The changes must become 2nd nature so that the recordings keep all their intensity and artistic depth.
